Pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns, but...
What is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation of the skin occurs due to the excessive production of melanin. Hyperpigmentation is not only cosmetic. It could also be a sign of an autoimmune condition, hormonal imbalance, cellular dysfunction, pre-diabetic stage, and altered cholesterol levels.
It can be patchy/spotted or diffuse and its severity depending upon the level and amount of melanin deposited at varied depth of skin layers. It is also a feature of aging. Sun exposure is one of the main causes and pigmentation needs treatment, unlike tanning which generally gets better with regular application of sunscreen.
